Motives in the Media essays
Motives in the Media essays In a world littered with mediums of communication, few have the historical significance of the newspaper. It is a part of who we are, and how we view ourselves. Their shapes, size, and color take us collectively to a simpler time, where we recall our parents in a very relaxing setting, reading about the day's news. The newspaper has an aura of honesty that cannot be denied. It is real, in the sense that it has weight and occupies space. It also is an established medium for delivering the news, information, not just to one small group of people, but to the masses. It is also non-discriminatory in its approach. The news is relayed in text, but also in pictures. One is not required to have a degree in some discipline to understand the news. It is just there. Words relaying facts from a writer to a reader. Yet in a World cluttered with stands full of different papers, how do they all survive, if the sole focus is to relay the news? It is a static medium of information, yet in a sense, it is very dynamic. People read the same newspaper, yet subtly, and without their knowledge, they leave with different thought processes. The articles, or stories, or advertisements have evoked a reaction, however, seldom is it the same reaction. In a World with numerous newspaper agencies vying for the readers eye, there is more of a precedence then ever on the editors of these papers to convey news and other information that will evoke a reaction in the receiving audience, and allow for the writers message to sneak through. What is of interest is the means by which the writers of these stories create these multilayered reactions, and also the nature of the message that is received by the reader. The primary medium for written communication of information on the University of New Brunswick campus is the Brunswickan Student Newspaper. This newspaper, written to a primarily student audience lends graciously to an analysis of the messages being conveyed to a ...

In what way Antigone may inform us about the the war on terror, which Essay
In what way Antigone may inform us about the the war on terror, which the government of the United States is engaged in - Essay Example Antigoneââ¬â¢s story could relate to the war on terrorism in multiple ways. In some way, Antigone and Polynices could be assumed the terrorists within the government of Thebes as presided over Creon. They chose to pursue some political goals that are not consistent with the wishes of the Creon. As such, they represented the enemy within. Creon had various options to handle the challenges brought about by the defiance of Antigone and the presumed disobedience of Polynices. However, his approach became inflexible as he was not willing to heed to the counsel of his own son and other people who had advised him to exercise some caution in handling the matter. It would be important to regard the various points of difference, which lead into the eventual tragedy of the kingdom of Thebes. Creon refused to heed to the counsel of the old seer who had warned him of the impeding tragedy. Some of the lessons about terrorism, which could be learnt from this tragedy relates to the approaches adopted. Usually, the method involved in handling terrorism determines the levels of success. It is important to consider some of the problems that relate to the matter of handling terrorism. In the context of the United States, it would be important to consider some of the issues that relate to the challenge of resolving terrorism. One of the problems of terrorism is that it operates within the system. The elements of terror in the society of Thebes were part and parcel of the establishment. Due to the insider element of terror, it is important to develop the most cautious approach that would settle the system. The tragedy in Thebes occurred because Creon refused could not reckon with his own vulnerability. It was essentially difficult to engage a system that was tied into his establishment. By destroying Antigone, Creon actually destroyed his own government. The events that followed the tragic demise of Antigone proved to be catastrophic

Something Rotten review - Essay Example Celebration of the Black Death was among the first work they did (McGRATH, 1) Nicholaw directs the show with a sure eye and endless inventiveness for a great sight silence. He uses the opportunity to add jokes thus making it funny and his choreography also runs the full scope from vast ensemble tap number to delicate duets and also trios. The routines are satisfying and often funny in their right, and every dance number depicts classy energy Scott Pask gives a marvelous set. The proscenium arch is transformed into a faux Tudor frame and the endless Disney cartoons and sense of the 16th Century ââ¬â are well manifested. For Gregg Barnes; he provides some superb, eccentric and garish costumes and for Natasha Katzââ¬â¢ lighting, is almost first class in each and every way. There is a very effectual moment in front of the Thames, a Moon and the bridge in the background that is lit in the light of love as a theme. The show is too beautiful to watch. The cast is magnificent. Brad Oscar all but takes away the show as the Soothsayer. He is in a superb comic shape. Brooks Ashmanskas come close in second position in his portrayal of the hypocritical, closeted Brother Joseph ââ¬â he gets away every laugh out of those bottom jokes that he makes. Brian dââ¬â¢Arcy James excels as the wayward Bottom. He has got the immensity of the material and handles it with his all effort and effortlessly. he handles the small domestic scenes with his loving and patient wife (the brassy belter, Heidi Bickerstaff, who has great fun satirizing Shakespeareââ¬â¢s tropes for women), to big-voiced numbers and persistent confrontations with his most hated rival, Shakespeare. He is singing pretty well and is, in every way, ovation deserving and memorable. Clad in skin-hugging, as the swaggering and rock star of the 16th century, leather, Christian Borle has the time of his life. Some excellent high tenor belting numbers, much flexing of impressive muscles and the special joy that accompanies the act

The Dead Father :: The Dead Father Donald Barthelmeis Essays
The Dead Father Jerome Klinkowitzà s remarkably insightful review of Donald Barthelmeà s work begins with an anecdote about an evening they spent together in Greenwich Village (Barthelmeà s home for most of his life as a writer), and how a perfectly Freudian remark by Barthelmeà s wife put a stop to the writerà s boorish mood:à ¬Ã «Why Donald,à she said, à «your fatherà s is bigger than yours.à She was referring to their respective biosin Whoà s Who in America.à ® It is Klinkowitz's well-argued contention that Barthelmeà s mid-career novel The Dead Father (1975) not only represents the high-water mark of his skill as a technical master of postmodern prose, but that it also embodies the central neurosis/inspiration driving nearly all his work, from his first published story, à ¬Me and Miss Mandibleà ® in 1961, to his last novel, Paradise (1986).(Though The King is mentioned by Klinkowitz, it is clear he considers it to be barely part of the Barthelme canon.)For Klinkowitz, Barthelmeà s near-obsessive goal as a post-modernist is to à ¬buryà ® his modernist father. For instance, Klinkowitz writes that, while at first glance à ¬Me and Miss Mandibleà ® seems a perfectly Kafkaesque tale of a man awakening to grotesquely transformed circumstances, in fact it is à ¬[f]ree of overweening anxiety and not painfully dedicated to existential questioning or angst ...à ®[1] à ¬[Barthelmeà s] first inclination is to laugh at rather than flail angrily against the forms and themes of an earlier style ...à ®[2]Klinkowitz cites à ¬The Indian Uprisingà ® and à ¬The Balloonà ® as oft-anthologized stories which epitomize Barthelmeà s work prior to The Dead Father; pieces which came to represent the postmodern short story with all its socially savvy and technically sophisticated style, yet stories whose primary tone is comic rather than the stilted existential dread of Barthelmeà s modernist precursors. Thus anxiety of influence is defused through comedy and exaggeration.Klinkowitz implies that, in Barthelme we have our first authentic American Beckett, but one in whose work optimism is neither desperate nor self-canceling. Skillfully mixing criticism and biography, Klinkowitz demonstrates how Barthelmeà s life influenced his work; how his time in the army as a service newspaper writer, and later as a publicity writer and editor prepared him to handle à ¬words and images as blocks of material rather than as purveyors of conceptions ...à ®[3]But the use of autobiographical material makes a point beyond that relevant to critical biography.Klinkowitz argues that a consistent thematic in Barthelmeà s writing was life as text--and therefore text as some sort of incarnation of life.As Klinkowitz writes of his meeting with Barthelme in the village, Barthelme à ¬was firmly inside his text.

How structural and linguistic devices are used to target specific audiences in printed media texts Essay
Different audiences expect and react to different ideas, presentational devices, linguistic devices and so on. For example teenagers may expect bright, vibrant colours and exciting design, whereas older people may look for softer, neutral colours and a more formal design. Of course, these are stereotypical views but the designers of the media texts must make them with a stereotypical view of their audience in mind. In this essay I will look at three different media texts aimed at different groups and explain how they attempt to appeal to these audiences. Firstly I will compare the ideas put forward in the three texts. In the Club 18-30 leaflet the focus is mainly on going out and having fun, in clubs, pubs and on beaches. The Superfamily piece talks about the activities that a family can participate in, such as pool games, quizzes, tennis courts, squash courts and fantasy golf. It also tells the audience about the things done to make a family holiday easier, such as baby care, childrenââ¬â¢s clubs and so on. The Forever Young brochure focuses on the older generation ands talks about the activities and facilities that they might enjoy, such as tennis, aerobics and golf, cathedrals to visit and conveniences like laundry services, money exchange, spacious bar and sun terraces. Now I will look at the presentational and structural devices in the three texts. In the Club 18-30 text bright, vibrant colours are used such as pink, blue, yellow and red. The title states the target audience straight away making it very obviously eye-catching to the right people. The pictures used are those of people dancing in a club and having fun as this is what most people going on this holiday want to do. This is not a full page advertisement as there is only a very small amount of information wanted; about the clubs, bars, beaches etc. This is all given in a fun, jaunty font with not too much reading needed. The Superfamily brochure is done in red, white and pale yellow. These are soft, welcoming, almost primary colours. This emphasises that this is a family advertisement. There are pictures a families by the pool as well as kids playing and having fun. All the borders are wavy and curved making this feel like a safe place for children and the font is plain. The Forever Young brochure has soft, autumn colours as well as natural blues and greens. Also, the pictures are serene. This is because the average older person wants a calm relaxing holiday. There is a full page layout with plain, simple borders. There are pictures of a cathedral and an empty pool. This helps add to the feeling of calm and relaxing on the holiday. I will next look at the language used in each of the pieces. In the Club 18-30 piece the language used is ââ¬Ëcoolââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëslangââ¬â¢ with misspelled words such as ââ¬Ëin yer faceââ¬â¢. This is to target the younger audience. It is humorous yet with some facts, such as bars, clubs and beaches to visit. There are some opinions such as ââ¬Ëhome to some of Europeââ¬â¢s premier DJsââ¬â¢. It states what the younger audience may worry about when it says that ââ¬Ëyouââ¬â¢ll need a fair bit of wedgeââ¬â¢. It also states that there are many things to do ââ¬Ëon your doorstepââ¬â¢ suggesting great ease, an important factor to youth. The Superfamily brochure uses informal yet informative language, like ââ¬Ëfor the sporty among youââ¬â¢. It is persuasive and serious, giving the reader a lot of reasons why the holiday is right for them. However in doing this it keeps a very friendly and approachable attitude as it wants to appeal to families. It states the many things that they will do to make family life easier, such as baby care and childrenââ¬â¢s clubs. Forever Young uses formal language as this is what appeals to a lot of the older generation. It is serious and informative, stating plainly what things there are to do and makes them seem calm for example ââ¬Ëit has a traditional, relaxed feel about itââ¬â¢. This is important as most older people want a relaxing holiday. It is persuasive as it uses opinions about things like ââ¬Ëprettiestââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëtraditionalââ¬â¢. Overall I believe it is very important for advertisers to use all means at their disposal to attract the target audience. They must choose the right presentational devices, the right language and the right style in order to convince the target audience to buy their product.

Security And Reliability Are Huge Issues - 1420 Words
Security and Reliability are huge issues when we go through the readings, throughout the module weââ¬â¢ve seen countless examples of how reliability can go wrong, and how we arenââ¬â¢t so secure in cyberspace either. In a world where there are reports of hackers exploiting security systems and stealing personal data at even the most sensitive and important computer systems, itââ¬â¢s said that with the ââ¬Å"proliferation of hacker toolsâ⬠the computer systems we have today are less secure than the oneââ¬â¢s we had ten years ago. (Garfinkel, 2012) My organization will be holding sensitive private user data such as credit card numbers and personal identifiable information like first and last names, email addresses, dates of birth, and so on. My organization will have to ensure that this data is secure from hackers and is on encrypted servers. We must also ensure the transmission of data when putting in financial information to purchase items is encrypted, to ensure th at the data cannot be intercepted via local networks or cookies. Security of the userââ¬â¢s data is paramount, any breach of trust can lead to a loss of trust between the user and the organization, resulting in financial loss. Another issue the organization will have to deal with is ensuring employees do not have improper access to personal data, that disgruntled employees cannot leak or access information once theyââ¬â¢ve been fired, and that employees are competent in security measures to ensure human error isnââ¬â¢t a reason for a data breach.Show MoreRelatedCloud Computing And The Computing1587 Words à |à 7 Pagesto approved.
